Evelyn's Story

“Hope you and the family are well, just to let you know that lovely Evelyn Matilda is now with us! She was born at 15:04 on Wednesday 17th Sept - the exact 'guess date'.

I woke up at 1am feeling some surging (which now in hindsight I think were warm ups) so I started to do some breathing and went back to sleep for a while. Headed out to the birthing centre a couple of hours later, was offered to be sedated with Temazepam which I declined. Looking back I am really pleased to have declined and remained in control instead.

It wasn't long after that when my waters released and I started to feel more surges. Went on with the breathing and listened to a rainbow relaxation. We got a nice big room with the pool plumbed in which I remember demanding was filled pronto. Perhaps the pool slowed things down after that, labour was about 10 hours in the end but there was never any argument about where I should be and I was allowed to remain there right through until the birth. The midwife was great, she remained on the sidelines and kept a very calm and quiet atmosphere. She read our birth preferences and was attentive to everything on there.

I remember clearly the point where I needed to change to birth breathing which was about 1pm in the end. After the head was visible I got a really strong wave of alertness and it took about 6 more surges until Evelyn was born. The breathing worked so well and I really noticed the difference if I missed one out. Oh, and baby was actually in the back to back position in the end - but clearly not an important factor as I almost forgot to mention it!

All in all Evelyn is perfect - healthy, strong and really calm. During baby checks they asked if I had been given pethadin during labour because she was so calm, but actually I had no pain relief whatsoever in the end! I felt so alert afterwards, people couldn't believe I had given birth just a few hours before.

Thank you so much, I have been raving about Hypnobirthing to everybody, absolutely the best decision to do the course with you.”
